From its inception as a training aid for a Yosemite trip to its role as a versatile workout companion, discover why this piece of gear has become an essential part of many fitness enthusiasts' routines.

At first glance, the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0 may seem like a splurge. Let's address the elephant in the room: it's not cheap. It comes in at $115 at the time of this writing, however, when you consider the value it brings to your workouts and activities, the price tag starts to make sense. The durability alone, backed by the "Scars lifetime guarantee," ensures that this investment will last a lifetime. Plus, its versatility extends beyond rucking to various HIIT workouts and everyday activities.

So, is it worth the price? Absolutely.

The GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0 offers unparalleled comfort, functionality, and durability, making it a worthwhile addition to any fitness enthusiast's arsenal.

GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0: The Verdict

Durability: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Performance & Function: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Price: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Value: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Overall: 4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

The Bottom Line

The GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0 shines in both size and functionality. It's simple, comfortable, and great for carrying loads used for shorter rucks, however, it shines as a way to carry extra weight during military-based and HIIT workouts. Engineered to endure heavy loads, this pack accommodates ruck plates weighing 10#, 20#, or 30# (sold separately).

While it may come at a slightly higher price point, the inclusion of the "Scars lifetime guarantee" makes it a worthwhile investment. A downside can arguably be its minimalist design (something GORUCK prides itself on) which means no extra storage on the bag but with a sack primarily meant for workouts over rucking, this issue is moot when it comes to the need to carry anything. Nevertheless, for those seeking a reliable ruck plate carrier tailored for workouts and quick outings, such as walking the kids or tending to the lawn, this rucksack solidifies itself as the best option.

Selling Points

  • High-Performance Fabric: The primary material is 1000D CORDURA® which means exceptional durability. The back panel and shoulder straps utilize 210D HT (High Tenacity) CORDURA® for added strength. CORDURA® is a trusted brand for its resistance to abrasions, tears, and scuffs, making it a common choice in military gear and other rugged equipment.

  • Minimal Bulk, Maximum Breath: The streamlined design minimizes bulk while maximizing breathability for a cooler, more comfortable workout experience.

  • Non-Abrasive Materials: Chafing won’t be an issue as the materials are specifically chosen to prevent irritation, even during shirtless workouts.

  • Ultra-padded shoulder straps.  This is especially important if you're just getting into rucking (or traveling with heavy loads).

  • Grab-and-Go Handle: A padded top handle allows for easy grabbing when you need to move quickly between exercises.

  • It has a "Scars lifetime guarantee" which translates to the last pack you'll ever use. GORUCK simplifies the guarantee like this: “You Break It, We Fix It.”

  • Ultra-Padded Shoulder Straps: These provide essential comfort, especially for those new to rucking or carrying heavy loads. They’re made of 210D HT (High Tenacity) CORDURA®.

  • Simple design.  What you see is what you get.  No flare.

  • Sternum strap.  The (removable) clip at chest height allows a good redistribution every so often during longer workouts.

  • Free returns.  Hate it?  You can send it back within 30 days.

  • Made in the USA.  'Merica.

Drawbacks

  • Cost.  It's not cheap.  While you pay for what you get (including a lifetime guarantee), that doesn't make it any cheaper.

  • Limited Functionality: Many of GORUCK’s rucksacks double as ideal backpacks or travel companions. This rucksack is not meant for that, and goes in the opposite direction with a focus on simplicity, lacking compartments for essentials like water bottles.

  • Not Ideal for Rucking: Maybe this is less of a drawback and just a point of observation so you don’t get confused with the GORUCK brand’s products which offer things other than ruckers. While I do use it for shorter rucks, it’s not meant to be used for longer ones. Better uses for this ruck plate carrier are HIIT exercises, military-style exercises, and activities around the yard. If you’re looking for a rucksack for rucking, consider this GORUCK Rucker 4.0.

Who Do I Recommend It For?

  • Those looking to add intensity to bodyweight exercises: Pull-ups, dips, lunges, squats, and other bodyweight movements become more challenging with added weight. The carrier's design allows for a full range of motion during these exercises.

  • People who prefer free movement over restricted vests: Unlike weight vests, the carrier doesn't restrict arm movement, making it suitable for exercises requiring full upper body mobility.

  • Anyone who wants to easily grab a ruck sack to use on the way out the door. I throw mine on when I’m mowing the lawn or going for walks with the kids.

  • Budget-conscious exercisers: The premium price tag might deter some compared to simpler weight vests or DIY weighted backpacks.

Tips

  • Don't load it too heavy too quickly during your first workouts.

  • Clip the sternum strap every once in a while to help displace the load to the chest instead of the shoulders. Don’t be afraid to clip and unclip to help you wear it longer frequently.

The GORUCK Rucker 4.0 vs. GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier

The GORUCK Rucker 4.0 and the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier are both excellent for adding weight to your exercises, but they serve different purposes.

  • The Rucker 4.0 is ideal for longer rucks, offering more stability, lumbar support, and the ability to carry larger loads. It's perfect for endurance activities and heavy-duty use.

  • On the other hand, the Ruck Plate Carrier is compact, allowing for free movement during various exercises. It's great for short rucks, quick workouts, and activities where agility is key.

I own and use both of these frequently but for very different purposes. Both are built to last with durable materials and robust construction, ensuring they can handle rigorous use without wearing out. See my review of the Rucker 4.0 here for more.

My Experience

The Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0 is my Swiss Army knife when it comes to getting a workout in. While I experimented with a weighted vest, I found that the front-loaded weights paradoxically burdened my back excessively and restricted my range of movement. This Ruck Plate Carrier turned out to be ideal for quick activities like shorter rucks (e.g. walking to the park with my kids), lawn mowing, playing in the backyard with the kids, and workouts.

The biggest benefits are that it's not as large and cumbersome as a typical rucksack but it can also hold plenty of weight (I typically do 30#) in a tight compartment. The plates slide in seamlessly, they don't slide around, and it's high up on my back in a concentrated spot. This all means that I can easily rotate and flex the spine without momentum causing strain to my back and increasing my risk of injury.

When it comes to workouts, like a HIIT one in the backyard/garage, this is my best friend. It provides intensified "body weight" movements, it centers the weight on my back so it’s not all at the hips and lower back, and maybe most importantly it is secure enough that when I’m changing positions it doesn’t slide around, to the point where I forget I have it on by the end of the workout.

Here’s an example of some exercises I use it with:

  • Push-ups

  • Planks

  • Squats (holding a kettlebell)

  • Deadlifts (also with a kettlebell)

  • Using battle ropes

  • Lunges

  • Mountain climbers

  • Jump squats

  • You can also easily take it off your back and use it as supplemental weight (using the handle on it) for exercises like:

    • Farmer’s walks

    • Cleans

    • Overhead presses

In summary, get the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier if you want a comfortable and simple way to add weights to your workouts and activities (that aren’t longer rucks) that will literally last a lifetime.

FAQ

What are the benefits of the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0?

  • Comfort and Mobility: Designed for weighted bodyweight exercises, it offers padding and a free range of motion compared to weight vests.

  • Durability: Built with high-quality materials like 1000D CORDURA® nylon for exceptional tear and abrasion resistance.

  • Versatility: Works with various GORUCK Ruck Plates (sold separately) to adjust weight for different workout intensities.

  • Improved Performance: Adds intensity to bodyweight exercises, helping build muscle, strength, and power.

Is this a good backpack for everyday use?

While it can hold some essentials, the focus is on weight training. It may lack compartments for laptops, notebooks, or water bottles compared to a traditional backpack.

How breathable is the Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0?

The design emphasizes breathability, but some users might find it warmer than a weight vest with more airflow.

Who is this product ideal for?

  • Weighted workout enthusiasts, especially those focusing on bodyweight exercises with added weight.

  • Athletes seeking to improve strength, power, and functional fitness.

  • People who prioritize comfort and freedom of movement during weighted training.

What are some drawbacks to consider?

  • Limited functionality for everyday use compared to traditional backpacks.

  • No built-in water bottle pockets or hydration system.

  • May not be ideal for long-distance rucking due to its design for shorter, intense workouts.

How much weight can it hold?

The carrier itself doesn't have a weight limit, but it's designed to be used with GORUCK Ruck Plates (sold separately) which come in various weights (10lb, 20lb, 30lb, and a Long format that holds a 45lb plate). Choose the plate weight that suits your fitness level and workout goals.

What are the benefits of the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0 compared to a weighted vest?

While both weighted vests and the Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0 add weight for your workouts, the carrier offers some distinct advantages:

  • Freedom of Movement: Unlike vests that restrict arm movement, the carrier allows for a full range of motion during exercises like pull-ups, dips, and overhead presses. This can be crucial for improving functional fitness and performing exercises with proper form.

  • Targeted Weight Distribution: The carrier positions the weight plate in the center of your back, promoting better balance and core engagement compared to some vests that distribute weight more towards the front of your torso. This often translates to a lower risk of back pain and discomfort.

  • Comfort and Breathability: The padded lumbar support and breathable materials of the carrier enhance comfort, especially during longer training sessions or bodyweight exercises.

  • Versatility: The carrier works with various GORUCK Ruck Plates (sold separately) to adjust the weight for different workout intensities. Some vests come with a fixed weight or require additional weight attachments.

Is a plate carrier better than a weighted vest for everyone?

The ideal choice depends on your workout style and goals. Here's a breakdown:

  • Choose a Plate Carrier if: You prioritize bodyweight exercises with added weight, full range of motion, comfort, and the ability to adjust weight intensity.

  • Choose a Weighted Vest if: You prefer a more budget-conscious option. While a backpack or ruck carrier is typically more ergonomically sound, some people just prefer this option. Ultimately, the best way to decide is to consider your specific needs and preferences.

How do I clean the Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0?

The simple design allows for easy cleaning. You can hose it down and hang it to dry due to its durable, water-resistant materials.

Is there a warranty on this product?

GORUCK products are known for their quality and durability, but it's best to check their website for the specific warranty details of the Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0.
